A Critique of Walmarts Branding

Walmart is an American retail corporation founded by Sam Walton in 1962. It operates in many countries that include the United States, Canada, Argentina, and Brazil. It is among the largest corporations in the world that employ a large number of employees.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on A Critique of Walmart’s Branding specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Walmart has come under attack in past years for offering employees low wages, sexual discrimination at the workplace, and unfair treatment of employees. Despite criticism and attacks, the corporation has maintained its position as one of the leading retailers in America and the world. Walmart is a relevant brand in the market because of several reasons that include its impact on economy of the U.S., influence on labor markets, and its sustainability efforts. Walmart is one of the leading employers in the world with over 2 million employees spread across its branches around the world. Research has revealed that its economic impact is immense. First, it provides wages to many people thus improving quality of people’s lives. Second, it offers low prices that make merchandise affordable to low income earners. As such, it alleviates poverty and improves lives of many Americans. Low-income households benefit greatly from low prices, which have led to improved consumer well-being. On the other hand, Walmart has immense influence on labor markets. Research has found out that presence of Walmart in the market increases employment opportunities even though it offers low wages. Its relevance regarding labor markets bases on menial treatment of employees.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! However, this is obscu red by the fact that it offers employment opportunities to many people. Brand positioning refers to a company’s or organization’s perception by customers. Effective brand positioning is one of the most effective ways used by businesses to create customer loyalty and increase customer satisfaction. Walmart has positioned its brand as a low-price retailer that cares for the welfare of customers. As such, Walmart’s brand positioning as the low-price retailer promises customers that the corporation offers the lowest prices for goods in the market. The focus of the corporation’s brand positioning is low prices. It does not offer any promises on quality of shopping experiences or customer affiliation. Therefore, Walmart’s customer base is sensitive to prices of goods compared to customers of its competitors in the market. The main reason Walmart is a leader in the retail sector is because of its brand positioning. However, analysts have criticized Walmar t’s brand positioning by attributing it to brand devaluation. This has led to Walmart establishing itself as a brand of low-priced goods for low-income earners. They further argue that Walmart could improve its brand positioning by incorporating aspects such as customer affiliation and customer experience in its brand positioning strategy. As a brand, Walmart is characterized by creativity, focus on customer needs, high turnover, low cost of production, and market dominance. Walmart’s high turnover and positive impact on economy could be attributed to its creativity.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on A Critique of Walmart’s Branding specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More It focuses on middle class and low-income earners who form the larger part of the population. As such, it offers low prices for its products. It is able to provide low prices because of its low cost of production and low wages. Howe ver, the brand is losing its market dominance because of emergence of online shopping stores such as Amazon.com that have improved convenience of shopping. In addition, development of stores such as Dollar General is affecting the positioning of the brand. Walmart is famous for its effective advertising that attracts more customers to its stores. In past years, it has used slogans such as we sell for less, and satisfaction guaranteed to reiterate its commitment to fulfilling needs of customers by offering affordable prices. In addition, it uses different registered trademarks that include the spark, live better, and save money to represent the Walmart brand. Walmart also offers store brands that present low prices as alternatives to name brand products. It offers numerous store brands such as Sam’s Choice, Dr Thunder, White Stag, George, Mainstays, great Value, and Equate. Additional brands include Apparel and Homeliness. These store brands are offered under the Walmart brand and have played a pivotal role in Walmart’s brand positioning. To improve its brand, Walmart has created a campaign to reinvent its brand to counter criticisms by labor unions and media. The campaign is aimed at cleaning its tainted image and negative publicity. Objectives of the campaign include digitization, reinvention of brand, development of solutions to existing problems, and restructuring retail store formats.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The reinvention campaign aims to advance Walmart’s philosophy of offering low prices to customers while maintaining its brand position as a low-price retailer. The value of Walmart’s brand was evident from nomination as one of the most valuable brands in the world in 2012. This was attributed to its focus on fulfilling needs of digitally connected customers, improving operations to include online services, and offering customers a chance to order merchandise even without money when placing orders. Its brand is worth $34.4 billion and is the most valued brand in the world. Essay Sample on Advertising in Society and Its Dubious Role

Essay Sample on Advertising in Society and Its Dubious Role Beyond doubt, advertising is as old as the first market. Right now it is an inseparable part of our lives. We can see commercials everywhere: on TV, in newspapers and in streets. We really ought to lay our account with this issue today. Advertising companies influence our minds beyond measures on our society, but is this impact positive or not? We often lay at the door of some companies, using aggressive management to win a market. All sorts of corporations do it with two purposes: to lay hold on the market and raise as much money as possible This means they create a strong positive image of a hero, who promotes some brand. Such a strategy is supposed to lay a strong foundation of positive image, connected with this or that brand. These role models influence peoples minds a lot. Consumers wish to be on the level with the ad hero and but expensive cars, gadgets and perfumes. When the company’s CEO makes the decision, he lays a lot at stare. Unfortunately, while using such strategies, companies do not care about the society. Most of them just want to earn as much money, as possible. Ideologies that advertising promotes are often cruel and anti-social. Plenty of commercials are violent, racist or use sexual images. While trying to promote their goods, corporations often humiliate other trademarks. And finally, most of the information we receive from the ads is simply not true. Some activists often try to raise this point in front to government officials, but the politicians minds are mostly at the back of beyond. This happens because aggressive management strategies are bringing profit sometimes beyond anybodys belief. Although advertising has its darker sides, it also brings us a lot of good. We learn about new products and sops from commercials. We also can find better or cheaper goods, using our TV-sets. While creating strong positive stereotypes, advertising agencies make people care about the physical condition. When Michael Jordan or Ralf Schumacher agitate for a healthy way of life, this makes people think about their health. A successful advertising policy can raise some forgotten product from the dead. And finally, brands that are being advertised, actually invest billions into the today’s mass media. Advertising plays a dubious role in our todays world. This is the issue that cant and shouldn’t be laid down. Commercials create stereotypes and destroys them; stimulates us and makes us more aggressive. If controlled and leveled, the role of advertising is generally beneficial. Theory and practice of managing people Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Theory and practice of managing people - Essay Example FollyWood is a large, open-air theme park where the vast majority of the employees serve on a seasonal basis. It was recently acquired by a large leisure company, Leisure, Inc., but is still run as a separate entity. FollyWood pursues a â€Å"hard approach† and does not exert any effort to generate employee commitment among its seasonal staff. As a result, the firm experiences high turnover among its seasonal staff, which is assumed to cause the fall in profits and increase in customer complaints. In light of these antecedents, this report takes the position that FollyWood should assume a comprehensive approach towards reducing the turnover of seasonal staff and motivating its staff, both seasonal and permanent, towards more productive and fulfilling relations with the customers, the company and its leadership, their co-workers, and other parties they deal with at work. The report shall touch on: 1. Undertake a job analysis and restructuring program (Heron, 2005). This will require creating positions that may combine seasonal functions with permanent ones, or realising economies of scale organisation-wide by integrating operations and sharing personnel with other units of Leisure, Inc. Activities that may be accomplished long this line include: 1.1. Perform a job description analysis of existing positions. This will clarify what actions are expected of individual employees in order to set fair compensation horizontally and vertically throughout the organisation. 1.2. Rationalise seasonal functions that may be combined to create more permanent or year-long regular jobs. The purpose of this task is to reduce the number of â€Å"seasonal† staff and instead increase the number of employees who would be able to dedicate their full-time efforts to the FollyWood. 1.4. Enhance job enrichment for currently existing positions. Job enrichment is

Tech 398 Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Tech 398 - Research Paper Example However, one of the most recent concerns directly affecting the functionality and operations of the civil aviations is the issue of terrorism. Since aircrafts are soft targets for the terrorist faction and their aim of leaving deep impact on the minds of the people is met, thus civil aviation has become quite vulnerable to terrorism. Given the severity of the lasting impacts that the issue may raise, priority must be given to engage the stakeholders in order to ensure that the damages are minimized. In this context, a paradigm has been emerged in the existing model of civil aviation safety to ensure measures aiming at minimizing terrorist episodes on flights. This paradigm incorporates measures like information desk being managed by US department of State, technologically enhanced equipment to screen the passengers, cargo screening, improved intelligence measures along with efforts to build an informed network of passengers. The Department of Home incorporated an advisory system whic h was color coded to keep the masses alert. In addition, efforts at global level are also at play, for instance, the International Civil Aviation Organization is working in collaboration with the UN to develop security measures to deal with the issue of terrorism in context to civil aviation safety. The paper will aim at analyzing the paradigm shift in the wake of the threat of terrorism to civil aviation safety. There is no second opinion in the view that the civil aviation industry has been impacted by the threat of terrorism. Though terrorism related incident had occurred in the pre-September 11 era as well, yet in the aftermath of September 11 attacks the situation became worse off than it ever was. The international traffic right after the attack saw around 40 percent drop-off in a few markets (Howard, Forest & Moore 66). Furthermore, the incident of Code Orange added insult to injury

Importance Of Media In Sport

Importance Of Media In Sport The first ever televised football match was shown by the BBC 12 Months After the service was born. Viewers watched 12 months before the match purely through excitement of which the two teams were to play. On the 16th of September 1937, Arsenal and Arsenal Reserved played each other in the first ever televised match. The first ever televised International match was between Scotland and England on 9th April 1938. Through the years television viewers have increased along with the popularity of sport. More sporting channels are available to watch on the television as a variety of providers such as Sky and Virgin are constantly upgrading and adding a wider variety of sports channels which includes many different sports. Per person in Britain the average viewing time on television a week is 25 hours. Sports channel viewers increase every day which means more of the 25 hours watched are spent watching sport. There are two bodies in Britain responsible for television and these are: The British Broadcasting Corporation  (BBC), which broadcasts television and radio programmes; The Independent Television Commission  (ITC), which licences and regulates commercial television service including cable, satellite and independent teletext services; (1) Showing times and slots for programmes are decided by these bodies and most of the times are decided by the shows popularity with the viewers. Ofcom (Office of Communications) is a company which licences all television services across the UK. They have a broadcasting code which all broadcasters must stick to and follow. Viewers are entitled to watch certain sports events free of charge through the BBC such as the Olympics, The Ashes and World Cup matches in football. Snooker and Rugby events are also provided free of charge by the BBC. Sky and Virgin sports channels cost money as they are sold as a package deal but money is also generated through offering of extra sport channels such as ESPN and Extreme Sports. Pay per View channels provide special events in Boxing and other sports such as wrestling. These events cost money but the viewer has the option whether to watch or not. Radio On January 15th 1927, The Rugby Union was the very first sport to be broadcasted on the radio. The match was between Wales and England and it took place at Twickenham. The radio is very important when relating to sport as it gives live commentary of a wide range of sports around the world. During sporting events many members of the public may not have access to a television as they may be at work or travelling. A radio is very accessible for example cars and mobile phones provide connections to radio signals. In many careers today workplaces allow radios to be listened to during work time. Football matches and also many other sports can be tuned into when a television cant be accessed. BBC Radio 5 is a very popular station for Sporting action, news and updates. Continental AM is the most popular sports news radio station in the UK. In the United States ESPN is the most popular as it covers Americas most popular sports such as baseball and American football. Both of these radio stations are majorly popular partly due to that they broadcast the worlds biggest sporting event which is The World Cup. Many people own mp3 players and i pods which also have access to radio stations. This is very useful when travelling by train or bus. Airplanes also provide headphones to allow passengers to listen to radio stations. Depending on the time of travel many sports events can be tuned into. Newspapers/Press Before television was invented a newspaper was the main source for accessing sports news and updates. The New York Times was the first ever newspaper to include a sports section. This idea grew at a very fast rate and more newspapers around the world began designating an area in their paper purely for sporting context. Below is a list of the UKs most popular newspapers: Top 10 UK Daily Newspapers 1 The Sun  (2,955,957) 2 Daily Mail  (2,096,074) 3 Daily Mirror  (1,239,691) 4 Daily Star  (823,025) 5 Daily Telegraph  (683,220) 6 Daily Express  (665,731) 7 The Times  (506,997) 8 Financial Times  (386,590) 9 Daily Record  (328,183) 10 The Guardian  (288,917) (2) The Sun is the most popular newspaper as shown above and it also has a sports section at the back of the newspaper. The problem with this is that The Suns information is believed to be not entirely accurate. Each newspaper has many different journalists. Cadwick and Nancarrow are the main sports editors for The Sun and are considered as major press to sports performers and managers. When editors gather information it can be totally altered for production and viewers interest. The Daily Mail is another popular newspaper for sport and it provides news and results for the following sports: boxing, football, rugby, tennis, snooker, golf and horse racing. The content produced in these sports includes information on different levels for example school football results. Newspapers are printed daily which is beneficial for finding recent and up to date sports information. Internet In the past decade the internet has became the main source of communication as well as promoting sporting information and news updates. The internet itself is found on many devices today such as laptops and mobile phones. This makes the internet very accessible no matter where you are located. Every day more sports facts and information is added to the internet which can be discussed through email or chat rooms. For example Facebook is the worlds largest social network website with a substantial figure of more than 500 million users. Sports updates and results are posted on this website which means a huge amount of the public have access to them. As well as social interaction to discuss sport there are also individual websites which give information in depth on upcoming and present sports events and competitions. It can be argued that the internet has now taken over television and radio regarding recent news and worldwide updates. Therefore the most viewed sports channels are now con verted onto the internet which allows the public to access live sports action and results through their computer. For those interested in predicting the outcome of these events, several gambling websites regarding sport have been launched and are now available for internet users. This is extremely convenient and efficient as the public can play a part in the sporting action straight from their online device. Sports advertisement is escalating on the internet which promotes a variety of sports and gets online users interested. Developing role models Role models are a major part of promoting sport around the world. Performers at the peak of their individual sport become a role model to sports fans and inspire youths to try hard to better their personal ability. When most people think of a sports role model the majority of the public would say the name David Beckham. David is without a doubt a main role model figure in sport around the world as he promotes football through advertisements such as television adverts and internet advertisements. Scotland also has role models in a variety of sports such as tennis star Andrew Murray. This 23 year old athlete is currently ranked number 1 in Britain and number 5 in the world. Many young performers look up to Andrew and try to excel in sport as he has. Sponsorships play a huge role in promoting sport and role models are usually sponsored by main sports labels such as Adidas and Nike. Andrew Murray appears in Adidas adverts on television and the internet which promotes tennis and sporting activity. Being a major role model in sport also comes with a certain amount of pressure. Most of Scotland relies on performers such as Andrew Murray to succeed and represent their country. The performer stresses about winning as failure may ruin their role model reputation and decrease their national popularity. National Identity This is when the nation unites or comes together and supports a national team in a major sporting event such as The World Cup. Advertisements through television, radio and the internet promote national status and increase the nations interest and support. Scotland is a very patriotic country and when a major sport event arises everyone shows full support by gathering together to watch the event or uniting and chanting the national anthem. All over the nation the event will be discussed and a high number of supporters will where Scottish tartan or kilts to show their full support. The events stadium or venue will be guaranteed a full capacity to represent the whole nations support. Agencies such as the S.F.A promote Scotland in major competitions and the management team are put under a lot of pressure to live up to this positive promotion. Both managers and performers are pressured due to national identity as they dont want to let the whole nation down and look to be a disappointment. National support plays a massive part on sport success because it increases the players confidence and belief in their countries ability to succeed. Conclusion This report showed the importance of different forms of media and how they influence sport. Technology is constantly improving hopefully new forms of media will be produced. Each form has its own individual benefits and they all play a part in promoting sport and advertising events. As described, role models and national support promote and increase sport interest and involvement around the world.

Machiavelli writes that it is the most precious thing he has to offer. The book consists of "the knowledge of the actions of great men, acquired by long experience of modern affairs, and a continued study of ancient history," which Machiavelli indicates he has studied for a long period of time. Although the book is "unworthy" of the Magnificent Lorenzo, the author hopes he will accept it. After all, the book offers its reader, in a concise form, learning which has taken its author many years of study and much personal danger. Machiavelli emphasizes that the book is short and direct, and written without without resort to "pompous phrases" or "embellishment." Its strengths are that it goes to "the truth of the matter" and addresses an important subject. He does not wish to seem presumptuous by daring to discuss the affairs of a prince, but, he suggests, just as only a prince, from his vantage point above the people, can understand them, only one of the people can truly understand the prince. He hopes that his Magnificence will see in the work his hope for the prince's future greatness, which has been promised by "fortune" and his "great qualities." And if his Magnificence will lower his gaze, he will discover how undeservedly Machiavelli has had to suffer misfortune. Chapter 1: "How Many Kinds of Principalities There Are and the Way They Are Acquired" There are two kinds of states or governments: republics and principalities. There are also two kinds of principalities: "hereditary" and "new." Further, "new" principalities are either "entirely new" or a territory annexed to "the hereditary state of the prince who acquires them." Annexed principalities can be put under the rule of a prince, or set up as "free states." New principalities can be won by using another state's military, by the conqueror's own military, by luck, or by personal courage and ability. Chapter 2: "On Hereditary Principalities" Machiavelli indicates that this book will not be about republics, which he has discussed in a previous work. Hereditary states are easier to hold onto than new states, since, barring the appearance of an extraordinary force, if the prince is not stupid, he will hold onto power by doing what his predecessor did. the prince :: essays research papers - Navigate Here - Context --- Chapters 1-2 Chapter 3 Chapters 4-7 Chapters 8-10 Chapters 11-15 Chapters 16-19 Chapters 20-23 Chapters 24-26 --- Study Questions Further Reading 2 Dedication, Chapters 1-2 Summary The Prince is a gift from Machiavelli to the Magnificent Lorenzo, son of Piero de' Medici, offered as "proof of [the author's] devotion."
